Performance Enhancing Substances

with one comment

Recently a friend of mine took Adderall for the first time. He tweaked out for like 10 hours straight, got a ton of studying done, and did well on his exam.

While I am happy that his exam went well and he was able to recoup the studying that he didn’t do, it also brought up the difference to me between people who use substances to study in college, and others who do not. While Adderall is prescribed to many people who actually need it, I know of many people who use the drug to get by in their classes after all they do for most the semester is drink, sit around, and don’t come to class. Honestly this annoys me because while I am not the best student, I like to think that most of my exams grades reflect fairly accurately how much work I put into them.

Using Adderall for good grades is like using steroids to win the tour de France. If you have used something that makes you super human, have you really accomplished anything?

College is a learning experience, I have heard many times over that most degrees don’t actually teach you the things you need to know for your job, they teach you how to learn. If you use Adderrall as a crutch to pass your classes, then that becomes the way you get things done, that is your way of learning. While this may be right for some who actually need it and will be using it for the rest of their life, the ones who don’t need it will forever be worse off for taking it.

The reason for this article even being is that I do not want someone who has been whacked out on Adderall to do better than me in a class simply because they are taking Adderall.  This takes all of the equality out of a class, and who knows how that person would have done with use of Adderall.

These are simply my views on the subject, and not meant to change anyoneelses actions or views.

Getting herpes from a toilet seat

with 3 comments

“graduating on time is as cool as getting herpes from a toilet seat” one of friends recently said to me.

This friend as you can imagine is a extremely funny guy, who to many people’s demise is leaving from UMBC after this semester and transferring to Florida State University. Seeing him go, will not be the hard part, but noticing when i wish he was there will be. So as to not get sappy and sound like the type of girl this friend enjoys the company of(highschoolers), I will proceed on. I was talking to this friend today, and mentioned that I bought a new messenger bag in the mail, he was not impressed.

You see, a few weeks ago this friend peed on his nice leather messenger bag. While this was not a completely unusual thing for him to do it was fairly disappointing, because now he carries his books to class in a mesh bag instead of a nice leather one. I find it odd when people pee on things other than a toilet or a tree. In my mind it doesn’t make sense, but in many of my friends minds…beds, computers , chairs, and even elevators make sense.

The relenting party atmosphere that some people have is, honestly, amazing to me. I have never been able to go out for a week straight, or do anything crazy like that. The claim that greater partying= lesser grades isn’t true, especially with this guy. His grades never seemed to falter, even while he partied 5-6 nights a week, and woke up groggy as hell the next day. Intelligence isn’t based on amount of anything consumed.

As my friend Uzi states very often, this man is “livin the dream”, it has always been his dream to go to FSU and now in his senior year he is finally doing it. I find that oddly inspiring, just to follow what he wants to do even with some of the people he cares about most staying at UMBC and kind of pissed off at him.

one of his best friends and roommate “Edward” often says things like “fuck you your leaving me”, while i agree that we should say these things(maybe with a bit more cursing), I feel that we should also include “don’t pee on too many alligators down there”

Baltimore

with 3 comments

As you can clearly see, my header is a picture of Baltimore at night.

To me Baltimore is everything you could expect out of a great city. It has many things which other major population centers do not have, such as the aquarium and a massive man made harbor. My uncle actually helped build the Inner Harbor as a pipe fitter many years ago, along with Camden yards.

Camden yards is a bigger landmark on the city of Baltimore than many people realize. In a time of huge concrete domes and plain stadiums, Camden yards was built as a throwback to the baseball stadiums of yesteryear. Once its beauty was seen almost no more domes were built and major stadiums took cues from its inspirational design. Honestly half of the experience for me when I go to a baseball game is just being in such a place, the first of its kind and something which has seen records be broken, and heroes made. I love the stadium more than I love the orioles themselves. Even in the upper deck, you feel as if you are a part of the action, its perfect.

The man made harbor of Baltimore is extremely beautiful and although some may say the water is gross, that isn’t what matters when you are talking about beauty. The fact that you can dock a boat 500 feet from a restaurant get off and eat and get back on your boat is something which not many other places have. The ships at night against the backdrop of the Science Center and one of the best Aquariums in the nation is something which walking around it,  seems surreal.

I love Baltimore.
